Choosing an internet option
What internet options do you offer?
Three residential connections — we match you to whichever works best at your address:
- Calyx 5G ($41.67/mo) — unlimited wireless internet on T-Mobile's towers, with a dedicated router. The cheapest option, and it works well if you have decent T-Mobile signal.
- Starlink ($55/mo) — satellite internet that works almost anywhere with a clear view of the sky, even where there's no cell signal. You mount a dish outside.
- Island Fiber ($50/mo) — wired, rock-steady 100 Mbps symmetric (same speed up and down). Coming soon to select areas.
Short version: if you have T-Mobile signal, start with Calyx — it's cheapest. If you don't, or you want the fastest possible speeds, go with Starlink. Fiber is the pick once it reaches your road.
How do I know if Calyx will work at my location?
If you or someone nearby has a T-Mobile phone, check the signal bars inside your home and run a speed test. If you're getting 2+ bars and 10+ Mbps, Calyx will work for you.
We walk through this step by step on the Calyx Internet page.
When will fiber be available?
Island Fiber is rolling out to select areas in the San Juans — it's not live everywhere yet. Add your address to the fiber waitlist and we'll let you know the moment it reaches your road. In the meantime, Calyx or Starlink will keep you connected.
Do I need to buy a router?
For Calyx, it depends on the membership level:
- Contributor or Sustainer plans — a hotspot device is included.
- Sprout (SIM-only) plan — you buy your own router. This is what we recommend: better performance, external antenna support, and freedom to upgrade hardware later.
Starlink includes everything you need (dish + router) in the box, and fiber comes with a professional install.
What if I can't afford $40–50/month?
You can get truly unlimited 5G internet for $14.89/month (or $13/month billed yearly) through Shield, run by the nonprofit Computers 4 People. No contracts, no credit checks, no paperwork.
If you run or work at a nonprofit, school, or library, Mobile Citizen offers T-Mobile internet at $10/month for qualifying organizations.
See our low-income internet page for details and signup links.
Can I use these for working from home / video calls?
Yes. Calyx, Starlink, and fiber all handle video conferencing, streaming, and general work-from-home use. Calyx speeds vary by location (25–150 Mbps); Starlink typically delivers 100+ Mbps; fiber is a steady 100 Mbps up and down.
If you need rock-solid reliability for work, consider a backup internet connection — a failover line from $20/month keeps you online when your primary connection drops.
Cell phone plans
Do you offer cell phone plans too?
Yes. We help you switch to Mint Mobile, which runs on the same T-Mobile network as the big carriers for a fraction of the price:
- $15/mo — unlimited talk & text plus 5 GB of high-speed data, for lighter users.
- $30/mo — unlimited talk, text & data (35 GB high-speed) with mobile hotspot.
Keep your phone and your number. See the cell phone plans page for details.
Support plans
Is there a free way to get help?
Yes — two ways, no charge:
- Sales support — free advice before you buy: product recommendations, plan comparisons, and coverage checks.
- DIY support — self-service troubleshooting guides and setup instructions, available 24/7.
Paid plans (below) are for when you'd rather have us handle it. See all options on the support page.
What does remote support actually include?
Anything we can do without being physically at your location:
- Diagnosing slow internet or connection drops
- Router and network configuration
- Helping you set up new devices
- Advising on upgrades or changes
It does not include hardware, physical installation, or third-party service fees.
Can I cancel my subscription?
Monthly plan ($10/mo): 12-month minimum commitment. After 12 payments you can cancel anytime — access continues through the end of the billing period.
Annual plan ($120): non-refundable; service runs the full 12 months.
If you chose "auto-cancel" during signup, the monthly plan ends automatically after 12 payments.
How fast do you respond to support requests?
As fast as we can — often within minutes. If we're on another call it may take a few hours. We prioritize in order received and don't leave anyone hanging.
What's the difference between remote and onsite support?
Remote ($10/mo or $120/yr) — we help you over the phone or remotely, anywhere in the USA.
Onsite ($150/hr) — we come to you for hands-on work like hardware installation and network builds. Available in San Juan County, WA.
